Let's look at what happened during Japanese rule

Singapore was renamed Syonan-to
Syonan-to means The radiant South

After Singapore was surrendered,Kempeitai were sent to restore order in Singapore

Kempeitai-Japanese military police

The method of ruling------->FEAR
Cruelty of the Kempeitai-------------->Left people in anxiety and fear
Slightest offence------------>Big punishment,Harsh
Japanese suspects------>Terrible torture

Now let's look at how different races were treated during this harsh time
Eurasians------->Japanese felt they were a threat----->Treated harshly or put into prison camps
Malay + Indians------>We're not regarded as a threat---->tried to win the support of the malays--->they weren't spared if they did something wrong.
Chinese---->Were thought as a threat to japanese rule

Now we know how the Japanes disliked the chinese.The Kempeitai started Sook Ching.
Sook ching----->Eliminate suspected anti-japanese groups which were in chinese communities

Chinese men (18-50 yrs old) had to be 'examined' by the japanese.

Okay if we fail an examination we have to be retained right?So just like this those seen as anti-japanese were to stay.If we get retained we will get scolded by our parents right?So these anti-japanese people were tortured.If we pass the exam we get to go home and be happy-dappy.So those who passed after being examined went home.

That was not only thing that happened to the chinese.The chinese were to contribute money to the japanese forces as a punishment.

Now if we remembered the japanese are feared by the people of singapore right?So they need to win their support.How do they do that?Propaganda campaigns.

Propagandas---->An action carried out by a government to influence/brainwash its people into agreeing to something.

Why do they need to use PROPAGANDA?They need to remove western influence which was left by the british.The japanese tried to promote Nippon Seishin(japanese spirit)

Things they did to raise japanese spirit
-Face the direction of japan and sing the japanes national anthem
-Mass drills(compulsory)
-Japanese lessons
-Controlled radio stations
-Japanese movies were the only movies shown.

Problems faced:
-Severe food shortages
-Entrepot Trade disrupted.

The people of Singapore resented Japanes rule(that was written in the text book but i think we could have guessed it by looking at what they did)
