Alright people here are history notes for you.I shall do these notes based on chapters
CHAPTER 2
Sir Stamford Raffles is known as----->the founder and architect of Singapore
The British chose Singapore for multiple reasons
1.Singapore was chosen as a trading settlement
2.It is also due to the relationship between the british and dutch
Alright before going on to more reasons lets learn about the relationship between the dutch and british.
-The British trading companies and the Dutch East India companies were in fierce competition
-The competed for Profit and Monopoly of trade routes
-The British developed China,India and the Malay Archipelago
-The Dutch had power over the majority of the Malay Archipelago
-The dutch CONTROLLED a large part of the region including JAVA and MELAKA
-Dutch restricted the british and other europeans to trade only at Batavia-in java
-British traders were charged high fees for using the port and pay heavy taxes for the goods sold and bought
The dutch set some rules for the asian traders aswell lets look at them.
1.Asian trading boats had to fly a DUTCH FLAG and carry a dutch PERMIT/PASS
2.They are only to trade at Dutch-controlled ports.
I know the dutch are weird Everything has to be dutch, dutch, dutch, dutch.Well they enjoyed their trade monopoly tough. This made them the rival of the british in south east asia.
Time to go back and visit the BRITISH
-China's trade became lucrative(Remember the British has control of China at that time)
-British had two trading settlements,Bencoolen and Penang.
-These settlements were used as stop overs to replenish supplies
-Let's face it Penang and Bencoolen were unsuitable for the British to gain in this monopoly.
Time to talk about Penang and Bencoolen
-Both are located away from the main trading area
-Bencoolen proved to be a poor trading settlement.
-If you looked at the map on your textbook(pg 23)Bencoolen is situated far from the Straits of Melaka(SOM)
-PENANG,was too north of the SOM
-It was not useful for controlling the SOM and protecting British ships.
Thats sad for the british well time to go to MELAKA
Melaka was positioned well.
